July 4
Drunk Driver - Smash-Up
When the story came out almost two weeks ago we didn't know it involved Kingston hockey prospect Jamie Arniel. Arniel was the one busted for drunk driving by Kingston police at 3:30 in the morning on June 22nd. Less than 24 hours after being drafted 97th overall by the Boston Bruins...Arniel was cuffed by the cops after a vehicle crashed into four cars, a hydro pole and a stop sign. The driver had also parked the car on a lawn on Humberside Drive and relieved himself behind a hedge.
Lafarge
Lafarge says it shouldn't have to prove its case at an environmental review into plans for burning tires at its cement plant in Bath. Lafarge will go to the Ontario Court of Appeal in a bid to overturn a divisional court ruling. That ruling cleared the way for the hearing that's set to begin on September 22nd.
Nursing Homes - Trillium
Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin is preparing to launch an investigation after the Canadian Press found three-quarters of Ontario nursing homes haven't met some of the province's 400 standards of care since 2004. Trillium Centre in Kingston was cited for 18 violations. It says staff worked hard to correct the problems and investigators told them last week the latest inspection found only two infractions.
New Y Boss
The new CEO of the YMCA is coming to Kingston from Sarnia. Mary Kloosterman will officially take over the Kingston Family Y from Gary Bissonette on July 14th. Kloosterman is the regional manager of four YMCA's in Sarnia - Lambton.
No Swimming
KFL&A Public Health has posted the sign saying the water isn't safe for swimming at Arrowhead Beach. Testing has shown a higher than acceptable level of E. coli bacteria in the water at the beach on CFB Kingston. The health unit isn't sure what's causing the problem. Rotary Park Beach is the only other beach in Kingston that is currently posted as unsafe for swimming.
Sky is the Limit
When we say - the sky is the limit - today...we're talking about a festival at the Memorial Centre tomorrow that will benefit the March of Dimes and Kingston Youth Diversion. Organizers hope to raise 50 thousand dollars for the two organizations. The Sky is the Limit festival tomorrow features a wide variety of activities and the highlight this year is two performances by the RCMP Musical Ride.

Nursing-Homes
There aren't enough long term care - or nursing home beds available in Kingston - and now there's a disturbing finding about Kingston's nursing homes. Trillium Centre failed to meet 18 of the government's standards - mostly relating to patient care. Extendicare and Rideaucrest each failed to meet one of the government’s standards. The homes have to present an improvement plan to the ministry. Providence Care was the only one of the four homes in Kingston that was in 100 percent compliance with ministry of health guidelines.
KGH - Board of Govs
The Kingston General Hospital Board of Governors has been told a three-month investigation that resulted in the firing of the hospital's CEO wasn't a hatchet job. The provincially appointed investigator and three members of his team appeared at the board's annual meeting yesterday to answer questions. Graham Scott says the team concluded KGH was not being well managed - and was unanimous in its belief that more could be done to improve patient access. They also found the board didn't do enough to challenge managers or hold management accountable.
Dead Cats
Cat owners are being told to keep their pets indoors as Kingston Police turn up the heat on their investigation into the killing of four felines. Police believe the deaths are related. They're asking anyone who finds the body of a cat to treat the area as if it was a crime scene and call police immediately. They're also asking anyone with information about the killings to contact them or call Crime Stoppers. The bodies of the cats have been found within a one-mile radius since September of 2006.
Fire
Lightning is believed to be the cause of a fire that destroyed a massive home under construction on Cranberry Lake north of Kingston. The lightning strike at around 5am on Sunday sparked the fire that destroyed the 63 hundred square foot home. Neighbours discovered the fire at about 6:30 and by the time firefighters arrived it was too late to save any of the structure. Nobody was living in the two-story house and it hadn't been furnished yet. Damage has been estimated at 600 thousand dollars.
Terry Fox Van
His marathon of hope never actually passed through Kingston - but the van used as the support vehicle for Terry Fox will make a stop in Kingston today. The 1980 Ford Econoline van is expected to arrive at Confederation Park around noon-hour. Terry's sister...Judith Fox will speak and Mayor Harvey Rosen will welcome what's being called the "Tour of Hope". The van will be on display and people will be able to make donations to cancer research.

Lambert Swim
She won't be swimming across Lake Erie today. Natalie Lamberts bid to become the youngest person to swim the lake has been postponed due to a weather forecast that calls for strong winds and thunderstorms. There's no word on a new date for the Lake Erie swim. The 14 year old still plans to cross Lake Ontario from Niagara-on- the- Lake to Toronto later this month. She's doing the swims to raise awareness for the "Y Knot Abilities Programs" at the Kingston Family Y.
Canada Day - Police
Kingston Police had a busy Canada Day with what's being described as a lot of alcohol related misbehaviour. There were no serious incidents reported yesterday - although there were several assaults and several incidents of domestic violence. One man was charged with assault and choking after a fight early yesterday morning in a parking lot at Bath and Gardiners Road. Police were also called to a dozen or more noise complaints last night - most related to fireworks being set off in streets, parks and backyards. There was also a pair of what police called...dimwits...who had set off fireworks on the balcony of their apartment.
Burglars Busted
Two people have been busted for burglary in Kingston Mills. Someone called police after spotting two people by the water sorting through CDs and DVDs. Police arrested a 14-year-old boy and a man in his early 20's around 8:15 last night and charged them with breaking into a nearby home.
Rural Internet
Help may be on the way for people living in rural areas around Kingston who can't get easy access to high speed Internet. A company called OmniGlobe Networks has been selected to provide a new network to deliver high speed Internet connectivity throughout the Kingston area.

Fire
Nobody was injured when fire destroyed a house on Joyce Street on the weekend. Fire crews found smoke and fire coming out of the roof of the home at 27 Joyce when they arrived shortly after six on Saturday night. The main fire was knocked down quickly - but crews had to contend with collapsing ceilings as they searched for hot spots. Damage to the house and contents is estimated at 235 thousand dollars. The fire is believed to have started in a vehicle. It was destroyed and there was about 2.5 thousand dollars damage to adjoining houses.
Clark - Obit
He was known as someone who could motivate other people to get things done - a football star with Queen's in the 60's and long time manager of the Memorial Centre. Ron Clark has died of a heart attack. He was 63 when he passed away last Wednesday. A service of remembrance is being held for Clark this Wednesday at 1pm in St. Paul's Anglican Church. Clark grew up in Kingston's north end and became a high school football start at QECVI. He went on to play for Queen's and helped the team win the Vanier Cup in 1968. He managed the Memorial Centre until 1998 and took early retirement when the city went through amalgamation.
School Bus Drivers - Teamsters
School Bus drivers working for Stock Transportation in the Kingston area have voted in favour of joining the Teamsters Union. The union will represent more than 100 drivers. Stock mechanics voted in favour of joining the teamsters last week. The union has already been chosen to represent drivers for several other companies that provide service to the Tri- Board Transportation system serving school boards in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington and Hastings - Prince Edward.
Canada Day
Communities across the country are preparing for Canada Day celebrations. Activities in Kingston kick off with the Limestone Mile races and the Red and White people parade tomorrow morning. Mayor Harvey Rosen will preside over a civic ceremony and announce Distinguished Citizen Award Winners at noon on the steps of City Hall. There's musical entertainment during the afternoon in Confederation Park and fireworks at 10pm. Activities in Grass Creek Park are scheduled from 1-6pm.
Holiday
Government offices, banks, beer and liquor stores will be closed tomorrow...there's no garbage or recycling collection. Kingston Transit will be running on a Sunday schedule. Many retail outlets...including some grocery stores will be open tomorrow - because of Kingston's designation as a tourist area.
Fort Hank
Members of the Fort Henry Guard will be in Toronto on Canada Day promoting a busy summer of events at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The guard will be at The CN Tower and Ontario Place - where special banners promoting activities at the Fort are on display.
On Wednesday - the first regular Sunset Ceremony of the summer will take place at Fort Henry...Kingston's top tourist attraction.

KGH - CUPE
The union representing 14 hundred workers at Kingston General Hospital says it will ask for a judicial review of a decision to fire the hospitals top administrator. During a noon hour rally yesterday...CUPE local president Luis Rodrigues promised to challenge the dismissal of President and CEO Joe de Mora. Rodrigues says the union is concerned the province is going to cut jobs and services to save money.
Rivoire - KGH CEO
The KGH board has chosen the person to take de Mora's place until the province appoints a supervisor. V-P of patient care and nursing supervisor Eleanor Rivoire was appointed interim CEO by the hospital board yesterday.
Goodyear Shutdown
The Goodyear plant in Napanee is closing down for a week. Goodyear is blaming the shutdown on a slowdown in the automotive sector. The Napanee tire manufacturer is closing this Monday. The shutdown affects 640 employees and 120 full time contractors. Employees were given the option of taking the week as vacation time.
Girl - Child Porn
A 32-year-old Kingston man and his 24-year-old common law wife have been charged with sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl and making child pornography. Police began their investigation on Monday after a complaint from the girl’s mother. The couple is charged with assaulting the girl over a period of about a week when she was in their home.
Man Busted - Internet Sex
A 25-year-old Kingston man has been arrested and charged with luring a 13-year-old girl from Port Perry over the Internet. Durham Regional Police worked with Kingston Police on the case and the man was arrested at the Kingston bus station - waiting to meet the 13 year old. Charges against Peter “James” Goudreau, of Carruthers Avenue, include luring and attempted sexual assault, and attempted sexual interference.

Lowe rips into 'moron' Brian Burke
Edmonton Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe tore into Brian Burke on Friday when he made an appearance on Edmonton's Team 1260 radio station. Lowe called him a moron, described the Anaheim hockey market as pathetic, and then discussed how Burke destroyed the Vancouver Canucks.

A.J. Burnett tied a career high by allowing eight runs for the fifth time in 195 big league starts as the Los Angeles Angels crushed the Toronto Blue Jays 8-2 on Friday night.
